5 Keys To Creating A Timeless Space

Posted by Tammy Newhof on

The inception of social media has ushered in a fast-paced, high turnover style of life. Trends seem to come and go so frequently – it’s dizzying. It is exceptionally frustrating when decorating your home. How do you decipher which trends will still be around in a few years? Should you try that deep green accent wall? Is that $1,000 boucle chair worth it? In short – no. Well, mostly no.

Striving for a timeless, classic look is the best way to avoid falling prey to the whims of social media. Below, I will discuss specific elements I consider when I endeavor to create that enduring elegance.

Neutral Colors

Neutral colors are at the very foundation of my timeless space handbook. They create a clean, sophisticated background that doesn’t overpower a room. Colors in the white, gray, and beige range naturally pair well with any furnishing or accent pieces. If color is a must, opt for traditional accent colors like black, deep greens, and navy blue.

Quality Pieces

Furnishing any space is – without a doubt – an expensive endeavor. It’s understandably tempting to settle for the cheapest option. While I am all for a bargain, quality is something to consider.

Especially when it comes to a couch – a frumpy couch can bring down even the most impeccably styled room. Pick and choose your integral pieces as items with a higher level of craftsmanship go a long way in establishing a timeless feel.

Hide The Technology

Nothing detracts from a clean, sophisticated room like cords hanging down from the television or a cluttered media console. If such items are necessary for your space, consider taking a more discrete approach and minimizing the cords.

Natural Materials

There is nothing more timeless than nature. Natural materials such as linens, wool, and cotton are popular choices. Aside from their enduring qualities, these materials can also lend a considerable warmth and texture to your space.

Avoid Trends

Although I am repeating myself, I felt this point was too important not to address again. While I would say the hard and fast rule is to avoid trends altogether, I know that’s not always the most exciting thing to hear. So here’s the caveat; accent pieces.

If you embrace the elements I discussed above and the bones of the space maintain a timeless air, there’s no reason current trends can’t creep into the accent pieces: pillows, blankets, knickknacks, etcetera. I would carefully consider the fad – and its longevity – before making significant changes to items such as furniture, flooring, and wall color.
